2019 Baubo

Aloha Daughters of the Goddess,

We just celebrated Lei Day where we made the most beautiful flower Haku Leis, talked story about the true Herstory of Hawaii, and celebrated Kahuna Leilani’s birthday.  We received messages from Spirit as Hawks and Crows flew overheard to our invocations and stories.  In the spirit of the merry month of May it is the perfect time to celebrate Baubo the Goddess of laughter and bawdiness!

Baubo is the Greek Goddess of humor and laughter.  She is the Queen of deep belly laughs, dirty jokes and finding the humor in life.  Baubo is part of the Eleusinian mysteries where Demeter the Goddess of the Earth was in mourning and depressed because Her daughter Persephone was in the underworld. Because of Demeter’s sorrow the Earth was in Winter and none of the plants would grow.  Lots of people and Goddesses tried to console and lift the spirits of Demeter.  Nothing worked until Baubo showed up. Baubo made jokes and risqué remarks, which made Demeter smile.  Then suddenly, Baubo lifted Her skirts and Demeter let out a long belly laugh.  With Demeter’s spirits lifted, She was able to fight to have Her daughter released from the underworld.  Life came back to the world because Demeter was happy again.  Thanks to the lewd antics of Baubo, all was once again right in the world.

Baubo’s name means belly indicating the belly laughter that She provoked in Demeter.  The sculptures and depictions of Baubo have a face on Her belly, with Her vulva forming Her chin.

Baubo will help you to find humor in just about everything, laugh until your sides hurt, flaunt your fabulous self, and stop apologizing for being too much.  She reminds us to be sure to let out a good belly laugh every now and then.

For this Ritual, you are invited to bring bawdy, sensuous and funny offerings to share.  For example: do a dance, read a funny story or poem, sing a song, or anything else you would like.  Let your imagination go wild and let’s bring on the fun and laughter!  Also wear your fun clothes, wigs, feather boas and sparkles.  Crazy and silly is encouraged as She is the Goddess of fun, revelry, and laughter.

For the altar, please bring a candle in a glass container the color of purple, red or pink.  If you are sharing a dance, please bring the music you want to use.  We will also do a special fundraising piece for Patrice’s tooth fund.  So bring your $1’s, $5’s, $10’s and $20’s!  Let’s keep those teeth for Patrice’s wonderful smile!

Please see our participation page for more information on attending our ceremonies.
