2021 Tara Mantra

Aloha Daughters of the Goddess,

Compassion sometimes is difficult to attain, especially for ourselves.  Enlightenment is something that many strive for.  Tara assists us on the road to both.  Opening our hearts and minds to the essence of the freedom of compassionate care of all.  Come and join us in an evening of chanting Her Mantra opening our hearts and our minds.

Tara, both Green Tara & White Tara, are highly honored and celebrated by the Tibetan peoples.  White Tara is associated with compassion and long life, Green Tara is associated with enlightened activity and abundance.  Both Tara’s are highly esteemed in the Buddhist tradition.

The story of Tara’s origin, according to the Tara Tantra, recounts that eons ago She was born as a king’s daughter.  A spiritual and compassionate princess, She  regularly gave offerings and prayers to the ordained monks and nuns.  She thus developed great merit, and the monks told Her that, because of Her spiritual attainments, they would pray that She be reborn as a man and spread Buddhist teachings.  She responded that there was no male and no female, that nothing existed in reality, and that She wished to remain in female form to serve other beings until everyone reached enlightenment, hence implying the shortfall in the monk’s knowledge in presuming only male preachers for the Buddhist religion.  Thus, Tara might be considered one of the earliest feminists.

Saying mantras, we are not simply asking for Her blessings and help with our lives and our “real problems”.  We are also asking to be liberated from the misery of our mental delusions and negative emotions that blind us to true freedom.  We pray to achieve the same enlightened body, speech & mind that Tara represents, not only for our own benefit, but for the benefit of all beings.

Come for an evening of prayer in the form of mantra.  For this ritual please bring your Mala beads if you have them, and a candle of either green or white.  We will be sitting chanting for a while so if you have a pillow that you are comfortable sitting on please bring it along.

If you are interested in participating in our rituals please see our participation page for more information.
