Aloha Daughters of the Goddess,

Imbolc was a remarkable ceremony with Brigid lighting our way on the very first opening of Spring. Our Brigid’s cross in hand we dance, sing, chant and celebrate life. As we move into the season of love, we look to Astarte to guide our way.

Astarte is a Goddess that although not much is known about Her, She was widely celebrated. Semitic Goddess She was celebrated in what is now Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, most of Turkey, and spread into Greece, Africa and Eurasia. Astarte is connected to the planet Venus in Her role as the morning & evening star. It is said that She is the precursor of Aphrodite. She is often depicted with horses and chariots after Her arrival in Egypt and as a beautiful naked woman, sometimes with wings or horns.

February is often known for being a month dedicated to and all about love. In Ancient Rome, Lupercalia was observed February 13–15 on behalf of Pan & Juno, pagan gods of love, marriage & fertility. February is named after the Roman Goddess Februa (or Februata), mother of Mars. Also known as Juno Februa and St. Febronia, She was the Goddess of the passion or fever (febris) of love. Valentine’s day is celebrated all over the world.

So, what better time to look at love. This month is about celebrating our relationships, and sometimes to look for one. And February is not only about valentines and sweethearts; it can also be a month for self-love and self-care, fostering relationships with family and friends, and loving others. Love has so many aspects, and so much beauty to provide. Let’s get together and call Love in in all its manifestations. For the altar, please bring a red candle in a jar, any images of Astarte, hearts, lion, horse, sphinx, dove.
