Yemaya helps us with many things. She is who we go to for releasing tears. She helps us find a home, and She grants our wishes to have children. She is the foam on the crest of the waves as well as the depths of the Sea.

Mama Yemaya is the Yoruban Orisha of the Sea.  She is the Mother Goddess of the Ocean and is known by many different names and is celebrated all over the world.  Luisah Teish describes Yemaya in her book Jambalaya: “Yemaya-Olokun is the Mother of the Sea, the Great Water, the Womb of Creation.  She is the Mother of Dreams, the Mother of Secrets.  She is natural wealth, the Mother of Pearl and Veiled Isis.  She is the mermaid, the full moon, and intelligence beyond comprehension.”

Yemaya is a large, beautiful, dark woman. She often wears a skirt of 7 layers representing the 7 seas.  She is the force of life and creation.  All life is said to have begun in the Sea, and Yemaya is the Mother of us all.  Her number is 7, and Her colors are blue, silver, and white.  She rules over birthing and children, matters of the home, and all of the affairs of women.  Yemaya will hold us and give comfort in our time of need.  Come and be blessed by Her waters and Celebrate Yemaya.

Please wear something blue.  For the altar, any images of Yemaya, shells, shorebirds, seashells, especially the conch.  We will be meeting at the beach, so please bring what you need to be comfortable.  Bring something to sit on, like a blanket or chair, sunscreen, hat, etc.  The weather is very unpredictable, so please bring layers.  We also spend time at the Ocean, so it’s a good idea to bring a change of clothes or a bathing suit, a towel, or a pareo.  We will be feasting during the ritual, so please bring a snack to share and your own dish and utensils.
